What is SportAvex?

SportAvex (a contraction of Sport Aviation Expo) is the largest gathering of homebuilt, microlight and recreational aircraft in New Zealand. It is organised by the Sport Aircraft Association New Zealand and it attracts aviation interests from all areas of aviation. SportAvex is held every two years and following the huge success of SportAvex 2004 we are again returning to Tauranga for 2006.  On Alternate years the Great Plains Fly-in is held in the South Island. Basically SportAvex is a showcase of “Flying for Fun”

The Show day for the Public will be on Sunday 5th February.  As well as static displays, trade exhibitions, food and amusements there will be an air show featuring aerobatic displays, model aircraft, custom built aircraft, Warbirds, Microlights, Gliders, Gyroplanes and Helicopters, parachute jumps, gliding displays and an RNZAF contingent will perform.

The aim of the three day event is to promote the sport of building and flying of aircraft for recreation.  For the Association's members this is a chance to display aircraft already finished and flying, discuss problems encountered and techniques used, conduct competitions and forums with fellowship the overriding theme.

The public day displays the aircraft we build and includes an afternoon airshow which comprises all facets of sport flying from model aircraft and up through microlights, custom built aircraft, rotary winged aircraft, classics to warbirds and participation by the Royal N.Z. Airforce.

During the "Wings Award Dinner" on the Sunday evening the recognition of years of dedication in building an aircraft is acknowledged with the presentation of the Wings Awards to those SAA members who have completed an aircraft in the preceding year.
