The Great Northern Air Race (GNAR) has been hosted and run by the North Shore Aero Club since 1993. It is traditionally raced during Auckland Anniversary weekend.
Initial routes were always around North Cape / Cape Reinga with overnights at airfields such as Kaitaia, Kerikeri, Tauranga and Taupo. However, in the later years, the race has travelled as far south as Omaka and Nelson, and has been around East Cape several times to visit Napier and Gisborne. New Plymouth on the West Coast has also seen several visits.
The concept of the race with its two classes (racing and cruising) is to develop VFR navigation, flight planning skills and airmanship all at pilot experience levels.
At all times, safety is paramount while fostering competitiveness and sportsmanship in an enjoyable social atmosphere.
Teamwork and team dress themes are encouraged.
