New Dates for North Cape Fly-around

Attention all pilots!

The Bay of Plenty Chapter's North Cape fly-around is now planned for the weekend of the 5th and 6th of July.

The plan will be to leave from wherever your aircraft is based early Saturday morning the 5th July and fly to Dargaville for lunch. For those that wish to we will stop at Graeme Weck’s strip at Patumahoe near Pukekohe for coffee on the way.

After lunch at Dargaville we will continue on up the left hand side of the North Island to Cape Reinga, make a right hand turn and fly down the other side to Kerikeri where we will spend the night.

Sunday morning we will depart Kerikeri for Kaipara Flats or other for further refreshments then on back to your home base.

The total length of the journey from Tauranga is approx 650 NM.

Detailed instruction and information will be provided to all participants a week before the trip.

At this stage we need to know who intends to join us for this weekend.

Sport Aircraft Association Flying Scholarships

The SAA has demonstrated great foresight and generosity of spirit in awarding four flying scholarships to young people.

At the SAA Flying show, “SPORTAVEX”, at Tauranga airport on 17th of February 2008 entry forms for the competion were liberally distributed to young people attending the show. Out of those completed and returned ten young people were short listed for further evaluation. Four were eventually nominated as winners.

The prize being awarded, ten hours flying to each student to be flown under formal instruction by qualified flying instructors. Two students are to be trained by “ Bay Flight” and two by “Tauranga Aero Club”,

Hi folks.
Just attended your air show at Tauranga and wanted to congratulate all concerned on such a great event. It was clearly well organised and included a huge variety of great aircraft. Everyone I spoke to on Sunday (displays, aircraft owners, etc) were hugely positive and enthusiastic.

Many thanks for providing us with a great aviation experience and congratulations to you whole team for such a successful event.

(I am one of those PPLs from "way back" who let their licence lapse, only to discover the wonderful world of recreational flying. I am a member of the Coromandel Flying Club and just about ready to do my flight test. It has been so great getting back into flying again!)

406ELB Safety Issue

Bruce Cooke makes the following comments in regard to the new 406 MHz ELB he has installed in his fuselage:
Whilst installing it I noted a major safety issue which I feel needs to be publicized amongst all aircraft owners, especially as many will now be planning the switch over to the new technology beacons. I purchased my beacon from one of several suppliers offering package deals. The packages are considerably more expensive than the old style beacons, but that’s progress I guess. The concern was when I came to install it, I found that the standard package does not include a second, portable antenna.

Alternative Weather Stations

Barry Clark of the North Shore Aero Club has recently set-up a website that provides access to alternative weather stations to help fill the gaps in information provided by Metflight and IFIS. He has recently added a network of web cams to give a view of many area's of interest.

Most cameras are in the South Island covering locations such as Hanmer Springs, Arthurs Pass, Mt Cook, Lake Tekapo, Wanaka, Queenstown, and many others. North Island Cameras include Mt Taranaki, Taupo, Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe, etc.

SportAvex Fly-In Tauranga 15-17 February

You will need to register to attend and enjoy the many activities on offer. There will be seminars held on all three days as well as fly-outs to local strips on both Friday and Saturday. These will take in some of the local sights and then a landing on a grass strip where afternoon tea will be available at a cost. There will be a briefing for this event. On the Sunday there will be two separate air displays. One in the morning for the benefit of any suppliers of sport aircraft who would like to demonstrate their aircraft to the public; also there will be slots for any SAA members who wish to fly. The afternoon display will concentrate on high-performance, noisy, crowd-pleasing flying as we have seen in the past. Any members who wish to participate in either show should contact Brian Horne on 09 528 8915 or email brian.elaine@xtra.co.nz . Landing fees will be waived for all display and competition flying but will be charged for your arrival and any joyriding. The SAA will pay all landing fees for members who register before the event so make sure you get your registration in early. This who do not register will get charged.
